Rising Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (1, 2, 3)

2024

Ink, water colour, gouache and a wine bladder (BoPET, biaxiallyoriented polyethylene terephthalate).

This work reflects the complexities of alcohol consumption, exploring both its rewarding aspects and the darker, often concealed consequences that follow. The piece is named after gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), an enzyme used as a biomarker in blood tests to monitor liver health and alcohol intake. Elevated levels of GGT in the bloodstream frequently indicate heavy alcohol use, linking the biochemical to the behavioural.

Presented as a triptych, each panel becomes progressively more obscured by ink, symbolising the descent into dependency. This shift from clarity to distortion parallels the often-deceptive nature of alcohol’s initial appeal—a journey that may begin with gaiety yet gradually erodes stability. The BoPET wine bladder as a medium adds a tangible layer, inviting viewers to consider the intimate, bodily impact of consumption. The application of watercolour on the BoPET evokes an imagined microscopic view of GGT, serving as a raw yet essential metaphor in navigating the recovery process.

Carpobrotus

This work explores the intrinsic link between identity, place, memory, and intuitive mark making. Tam O’Shanter Bay, along the Bass Strait beside the small community of Lulworth, my hometown, has always been deeply embedded in my practice. Immersion within this environment plays a crucial role in understanding how identity and place interrelate.

To be within place, the process of painting becomes meditative, a musing on mark making. Each stroke is a contemplation, connecting deeply with the environment and the memories it evokes. Carpobrotus, also known as Pig Face, appears as a recurring motif, a note to the rugged beauty and resilience of the Tasmanian coastline. By transposing these recollections onto paper, the intention is to capture the essence of enduring impressions left by the natural setting. Sensory echoes of nature are revealed in the connection between external landscapes and internal selves.

This work communicates the multifaceted relationship between place and identity, capturing a specific moment in time.
